MY DUTY,
MY BROTHER

By PAOLA LATTANZI

With BARBARA ALLEGREZZA E NICOLÓ CASTAGNI / CARMINE DIPACE

Production DANCEHAUSpiù

Debut on 13 may  2023

Duration 30'

Inspired by 'The Big Notebook' by Ágota Kristóf.

Against the horrific backdrop of World War II, two brothers, abandoned by their mother, temper their bodies and psyches to withstand the harshest trials. In the notebook, they train themselves to write down what they see in the world, in the protagonists' desperate search for a mythological 'truth of the facts' that is narratable, for a logical order of things that helps justify events and for an apparent balance of the world. The time of narration is confused. the lies of memory are often survival: theirs is a recreation of their own biography in order not to crumble, to ward off pain, to build an identity.

"Living, I can't live but the mind authorizes me to believe that a story of mine, positive or not is something within reality.

Free, feeling free maybe for a moment is possible, but what's the point if the measure of my worthlessness is conscious in me.”                              - Giorgio Gaber

I AM NOT OF THIS WORLD

But I am in this world and I inhabit its border.

What is true and what is false?

The mind is an invention of Plato and there is no other evidence than that of the body.

I am not of this world is an inquiry into "alien" presence; it stems from a sense of disconnection and a desire for dis-identification. Human resistance and precariousness, fulcrum of my research on the body, are acted out according to other laws, bodies challenge a new environment where harmony is always threatened.

Born out of a reflection on the sense of duty, it is an investigation that starts from researching the relationship between the instinctive and rational parts of the human soul and body, the states of consciousness through which human beings make choices that relate them to each other. We started with the question, "What is my duty?" And we tried to define the boundaries of duty and desire.

Doing, observing, fulfilling one's duty, neglecting to miss one's duties, moral duties, civil duties, social duties, religious duties, marital duties, scholastic duties; duties to God, to country, to society, to neighbor, to family, to self; duties as a father, mother, husband, daughter, student; I know my duty, I feel in duty, the way of duty, the voice of duty; remaining a victim of one's duty.

The intimate relationship with duty defines choices and identity.

"These things never happened but they are always".

There is no claim to rework Ibsen's Borghese drama. I just stole Nora. I wanted to play with that rebellious character, modern Antigone, who chooses to exclude herself, to escape.
The house, symbol of an interior from which to escape and where to take refuge is a metaphor for the body. A body that hides and overflows with memories and longing for renewal.

A place of transformations and processes to keep in balance, the home is the space of energies to be balanced.
